Our professional staff are based at the RES’s Westminster office and are responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Society under the direction of the Chief Executive.

Leighton has spent the past 25 years in roles spanning academic and clinical research, policy and education, including leadership positions in the private and charitable sectors.
Leighton is a Governor of the University of Northampton and has previously served as Treasurer for The Evidence Quarter (a hub for the UK What Works Centres) and as a Trustee for the Foundation for Professionals in Services for Adolescence and for the British Institute of Radiology. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Voluntary Sector Management from Cass Business School and a Diploma in Charity Management from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Marie-Luiza oversees the development and delivery of the Society’s key programmes and outreach for its members and potential members. She is the staff strategic lead on Diversity, Inclusion and Professional Conduct. As well as staff strategic lead on the Professional Development & Education, Conference and Women’s Committees. Marie-Luiza has an extensive background as a senior manager within the charity sector specialising in new projects around organisational change and workforce development.

Georgina manages the RES Annual Conference as well as the Society’s professional development events, she also oversees the RES Doctoral Training Programme.
Georgina has worked in event management within the not-for-profit sector for many years, more recently at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. She is experienced in coordinating complex, large-scale conferences. Georgina has a background in marketing and design and holds a BA in silversmithing.

Iara holds a first class BA in Journalism from the Methodist University of Piracicaba, Brazil. She is currently studying for an AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting, and previously worked at The Nautical Institute as their Finance Assistant Manager.

Jim has a background in operations management and business leadership from work in the education and charity sectors. At RES he is responsible for day-to-day operations and will be developing RES policies.

Brooke joined the Royal Economic Society from the College of Optometrists where she managed the journal Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics and commissioned and collaborative research projects. Prior to that she was a higher education policy researcher. Brooke holds a BA in English Literature and History of Art and an MA and PhD in History and Theory of Art and Design.

Sam is Senior Campaign Manager for Discover Economics, working to attract the brightest and best students to the subject irrespective of their background. He holds a BA in Economics from Newcastle University and has previously worked in the charitable sector, a secondary school and at an EdTech organisation. He is a Non Executive Director for the Linskill and North Tyneside Community Development Trust, a school governor and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Sandy is leading on partnership development. She has a background in International Development and Climate Action, and has worked for Amnesty International IS, Progressio, Global Greengrants Fund UK, Global Canopy. She brings a wealth of experience building new projects and partnerships across the board with Trusts, Foundations, Corporates, to increase social impact with a strong commitment to widen participation and strengthen engagement. She has spent time living and working abroad in Japan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Cameroon and brings a global perspective with cultural sensitivity. Sandy loves travelling, sports, being outdoors and running to keep up with her two children.

Jared has worked in communications and marketing across the mining and not-for-profit sectors in Australia and the UK. He has experience in strategic communications, digital engagement and brand development, and has led initiatives to strengthen membership and public outreach. He holds degrees in Journalism and Economics.

Abby was previously the Head of Science in a secondary school in Bradford where she taught 11-18 year olds and specialised in Chemistry. She has a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and has joined Discover Economics to support students from all backgrounds to access the wonderful world of Economics.

Maria is Programme Officer for the RES Doctoral Training Programme, supporting PhD students to gain the skills necessary for a career in economics research. She has a background in Economics and History and is currently doing a PhD in Social Reproduction and Women’s/Labour History. They are also doing research on pedagogies in Economics and are involved with the student movement pushing for change in the discipline.

Emma provides key support across the Society’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, including the UK Women in Economics Network and the Diversity and Inclusion Network. She has over 20 years’ experience in the arts and events sector, with a background in multi-arts programming, festival management, and audience development.
Emma also lectures on the BA (Hons) Festival Management course at BIMM University London, where she leads on curriculum delivery and academic development. She brings extensive project management experience and a strong commitment to inclusive practice and meaningful engagement, informed by her work across a broad range of cultural and live event contexts.
